“Streak running” is a term adopted by the U.S. Running Streak Association and other runners to describe people who run a mile or more every day without ever taking a day off. Nancy entered this fraternity with her son Tim on August 15, 2007, and has run a mile or more every day since then. Unlike 60’s-era “streakers,” with whom they are often confused, they do not run naked (at least Nancy does not – she cannot speak for the entire group of streak runners). Some do run barefoot, but again, not Nancy.
Although not many people commit themselves to running a mile or more every day, just about all of us are engaged in some kind of “streak” – some activity or practice that we repeat day after day. Mindful eating; mindful living; prayer; meditation; conscientious parenting; journal writing; drawing; walking; devoting time to spouses, friends and pets; practicing the piano; communing with nature; renouncing addictions.
Lives are made up of daily practices such as these – along with other things we do not do every single day. In this respect, we are all engaged in “streaks” of some kind or another, which led to the name of Nancy’s blog: Life’s a Streak Run. Living life is something we make a daily practice of, repeating certain actions day after day. Life can also feel like a joyous streak across a grassy lawn, clothed or unclothed, executed with a sense of abandon and glee. And sometimes it seems like life – our own or other people’s – is here and gone in a streak.
Follow Nancy’s journey through the streak runs of her life, and offer comments on your own life streaks too. Happy streaking!
